Sunlight (2025)

The contrast of green and blue on a clear summer day, the mellow mood of the haze hanging over the distant sky and sea. Driven by the beautiful scenery that spreads out before me on National Route 10 along the coast, I moved to Hyuga, Miyazaki, a surf town.

Living in Hyuga, locals often ask me, "Why did you come to such a deserted place if you're not a surfer?"

And every time I see their puzzled expressions, I realize that the "beauty" I saw so clearly was actually invisible to the eye, very natural and humble. When I learn about another form of beauty and think about the people who live there, I feel peaceful again and fall in love with this town even more.

Then one morning, the sunlight that changes with the seasons shined into my room, making the familiar and boring walls and shelves fresh and beautiful, and the word "SUNLIGHT" came to mind. I felt that I could express my experience in Hyuga, so I started making this series.

Boring Days Studio

晴れた夏の日の緑と青のコントラスト、遠くの空や海にかかる霞のメロウなムード。海沿いの国道10号線にありありと広がる美しい景色に駆り立てられ、僕は宮崎県日向市というサーフタウンに移住しました。日向で暮らしていると、「サーファーでもないのに、なぜこんな何もない所に来たの？」と地元の人によく尋ねられます。そして彼らの不思議そうな顔を見る度に僕は、自分の目に鮮明に映っていた"美しさ"が本来、目にも見えずとても自然で謙虚な姿をしていたことに、ふと気が付くのです。美しさの別の在り方を知る時、その中で生きる人々について考える時、僕はまたピースフルな気持ちになって、ますますこの街を好きになるのでした。そしてとある冬の朝、季節により変化した陽の光が部屋に差し込んで、見慣れて退屈だった壁や棚を新鮮で美しいものにした瞬間、「SUNLIGHT」という言葉が浮かび、僕の日向での体験を表現できる気がしてこのシリーズの製作をスタートしました。SUNLIGHTの作品たちが、周りの世界の美しさや別の意味に気づかせてくれる陽の光のような存在であれたら。そんな想いで色を重ねた風景画をぜひおたのしみください。
