海から水族館へ、そしていずれは映画スターに。人間社会での出世をひそかに夢見るあしかが、カフェで誰かを待っているシーンです(おそらくその誰かが現れることはないでしょう。)この絵は、人間社会にもしあしかが現れたらどのような扱いを受けるだろうという発想から始まったストーリーで、街(＝人間社会)における個人の扱われ方について描いています。街というのは、みな誰の目も気にせず自由に生きることのできる空間です。そこでは、たとえあなたがあしかだとしても、あからさまに誰かに攻撃されることなくやり過ごせる、むしろその特徴的な存在が多様性の象徴としてまつりあげられたりするかもしれません。あしかであるあなたがカフェに行こうと思えば、ひとまずテーブルくらいには通されるでしょう。しかし、所詮あしかは臭く、汚く、ずぶ濡れで、そのままそこにいてはいけない存在。あなたは目の前で掃除されて結局は邪険に扱われ、公共の安全のもとにやんわりと排除されてしまう、そんなお話です。

From the sea to the aquarium, and eventually to a movie star. This is a painting of a sea lion who quietly dreams of success in human society, waiting for someone at a cafe. (Probably the person he is waiting for will never show up.)
This painting is a story that started from the idea of how a sea lion would be treated if it appeared in human society, and depicts how individuals are treated in the city (= human society). A city is a space where people can live freely without worrying about what others think. Even if you are a sea lion, you can get by without being openly attacked by anyone there, and your unique existence may even be celebrated as a symbol of diversity. If you, a sea lion, want to go to a cafe, you will probably be shown to a table at least. However, after all, sea lions are smelly, dirty, and soaking wet, and should not be there. The story is that you are cleaned up in front of you, and in the end, you are treated rudely, and gently removed for public safety.
