フルーツをお尻に見立て写真を撮る少年をモチーフに、アイデンティティの模索について描いた作品です。おそらく女の子に声を掛けることもできない彼は、非常に回りくどい手法で自身の表現や存在を示そうとしています。しかし結局はただストレートに女性に声を掛ける男が本物のお尻を持っていく、というような結末になっています。アメリカの西海岸のような色彩の背景は、どことなく陰鬱な少年とは対照的に描かれており、この街における彼の居場所の無さをより浮き彫りにするものとなっています。少年のモデルになったのは、1980年代に社会的弱者、性的マイノリティ等からカルト的な人気を博したイギリスのバンド"The Smiths(ザ・スミス)"およびそのファンたちです。今回の絵のヒントにもなった彼らの楽曲「Half a person /The  Smiths (1987)」の歌詞の中で、主人公が恋人とは別の人物を長年追いかけていることが独白されるのですが、その相手の性別は明らかにされていません(むしろ同性であることが仄めかされています)。この曲から着想を得た本作品では、街の中における自分の居場所、人間関係、性的嗜好、あらゆるアイデンティティが揺らぎ、それらを模索する姿が描かれています。

This work is about the search for identity, with a motif of a boy who takes pictures of fruits as butts. He probably can't even talk to girls, so he tries to express himself and show his presence in a very roundabout way. But in the end, the man who just talks to women directly takes their real butts. The background, with colors like those of the American West Coast, is drawn in contrast to the gloomy boy, further highlighting his lack of a place in this city. The boy is modeled after the British band "The Smiths," which had cult popularity among the socially disadvantaged and sexual minorities in the 1980s, and their fans. In the lyrics of their song "Half a person /The Smiths (1987)," which was the inspiration for this painting, the protagonist monologues about chasing the tail of a person other than his lover for many years, but the gender of the person is not revealed (it is rather hinted that it is the same sex). Inspired by this song, this work depicts the uncertainty and search for one's place in the city, one's relationships, sexual preferences, and all aspects of one's identity.
